The US has dominated the world for being one of the most popular study destinations for international students. There is no doubt having an American university listed on your resume would establish that you have studied in one of the best higher education systems in the world.
1. Academic Flexibility
Great news for indecisive students! In the US, students are allowed to remain “undecided” on their major until the end of their second year of studies.
Can’t decide between Software Programming or Computer Science? Not a problem! Chances are, you might end up graduating with a Cyber Security major. However, this flexibility is often confused by many since most countries require students to decide on their preferred major of study during their early application stage.
2. Well-rounded Education
Since it is not necessary to declare your major immediately, you have the opportunity to study a wide range of academic subjects, and not just subjects related to your major. This gives you the time and experience needed to be certain of your major. You might even discover a passion or skills that you were not aware of.
Some universities require you to fulfill a certain amount of credits of subjects outside your majors in order to graduate. Often times, you will see a student from Engineering major in your Religion Studies class or a Linguistic major student in your Astronomy class. It is completely normal and let’s not be surprised when it happens!
3. Various Campus Experience
As technology continues to grow, so is the way information is being delivered. Universities in the US constantly change their classroom structures and instruction methods to make learning more engaging and most importantly, relevant to your field. Students are exposed to web-based classes and computer-based tests; way before Covid-19 pandemic.
Students are also able to access to different labs and resources to accommodate their needs. Imagine yourself being in the most modern classroom with unlimited resources needed to excel in your studies! You will immediately find yourself to new ways of learning, studying, researching, and taking tests.
4. Cultural Diversity On or Off Campus
The US is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. You will almost immediately find someone who share a similar background with you on campus. Many universities take pride in their cultural diversity and has continuously trying to grow the numbers.
Many American universities have a well-established international student office. In order to make student’s transition to adapting to a culturally and academically different environment, international student office provides a wide range of student services such as visa status, housing, English-language writing workshops, resume and employment assistance, and more!
5. Long-Term Career Prospects
US do allow international students the ability to stay back after they had graduated to pursue their career at some of the world’s most reputable companies. A massive effort was taken in 2016 to allow graduates from STEM fields to stay for 2 years to acquire professional experiences. The work field are always hungry for ambitious and hard-working fresh graduates. Be sure to speak with your career counselor to help you in the near future!
